There is nothing more St. Louis than high amplitude tracks, Cardinals jerseys, and "Chinamen" (Hold your political correctness: "Chinamen" is a term of endearment for the rare delicacy that is St. Louis-based Chinese food). The flavor of St. Louis is that bit of Sriracha that makes any meal satisfyingly tangy. A city of realists who hold innovation in our palms, St. Louis is truly a gem.
Natives have a love-hate relationship with the city. We honor the communities we have become apart of while disowning its segregated nature. We represent #314 as if we are all members of an elite secret society; and yet, many of us move to new cities for more opportunities. St. Louis is a reflection of its placement in the states. Found smack dab in the middle of the US, St. Louisians carry remnants of the south in our voices. Our exteriors are as tough as East coast winters. And yet we carry sunshine in our dance moves, bounce in our music, and an exuberance that is as alluring as California beaches. St. Louis is all-encompassing with room for future development.
Artists from the city use a multitude of mediums in order to share their perspective. Rapper Slikk Darko creates music for "the crib", highlighting his escapades throughout the city. Laced in charisma, Slikk exemplifies what it means to put on for the city. Working with producer chrisfrmkro, Slikk uses his visuals and music to display his relaxed demeanor and inspire a good time. It is this philosophy of maintaining youthful joy that connects his art to the self-care movement: a smile or a laugh makes life's circumstances that more palatable.
